Different rear axle trouble!

Ho Hum!
I was out today for a good spin, got home and decided to check the chain tension.
It was slightly loose so, no prob, just loosen the axle nut and move the wheel back a little.
The nut was fairly tight, but after a few turns it wasn't getting looser.


Here's why


I had trouble with the front axle and caliper bolts too but got them out without damage, the cause? Loctite.

Whoever serviced the bike last had a tube of green super strength loctite and wasn't afraid to use it.
If I ever find them they will have to have it surgicaly removed

I am going to cut the glued on axle nut off and try to save the axle.

shopping list so far: LHS chain slider block, new axle nut and possibly a new axle. I have had the rest of the bike apart so there shouldn't be any more suprises

If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all

Wow D mac .. looking at that pic .. looks so wrong .. I know .. it's been the centre of my attention (chain & sprockets) for the last week ! New chain & sprockets this Fri or Mon . Back to normal driving then ! Been taking it easy (very hard to hold back). Cancelled the dyno run ... far too risky with a fooked chain ! Curiously enough ,the sprockets look perfect.. will have a closer look when I change them. Otherwise , engine running sooo sweet... look forward to seeing yours up & running

You may try heating the nut above 400 deg F with a torch. It should break down the thread locker.
That is what Lock-Tite recommends for their high-strength thread lockers.

Feel your pain DMAC i had alot of probs with mine and that was just cus it wasnt copperslip'd before the axle was put back. People do seem to over use loctite, i only put a smidge on. My mates have taught me 'dont put too much on because you will prob be the one who has to get it off'

Ebay to the rescue!
I have managed to get an axle with nut and slider blocks on ebay US.
With the weak dollar it was cheap, even with shipping across the Atlantic. It should be here early next week.

Subsailor, cheers for the tip, I normally would use heat for stuck fasteners, but I don't want to burn the lacquer on the alloy swing arm.

I have drilled two holes on either side of the nut and then used a dremel type tool to slice through the rest. So the nut is off The axle is not seized in either

Hey Goose, who would have thought the back axle could cause so much trouble Better to find out now than stuck on the side of the road, miles from home with a puncture.

So just have to wait on the postman now

Don't forget to apply a bit of grease to the axle before you slide it in.
That should (hopefully) prevent any corrosive seizure with the bearings which has happened to others in the past.
Especially if you frequently ride it in the wet.

ebay US supplied me with the replacement rust free parts.
I fitted the parts today with a nice coat of grease on the axle, and now I am 100% happy with it's mechanical condition
